About
Dixylylethane is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Dixylylethane (1,1-bis(3,4-dimethylphenyl)ethane) is an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent produced by Friedel-Crafts alkylation of xylene with ethylene. It was once used as a substitute for phthalate plasticisers and in fragrance solvents. While it does not contain benzene directly, aromatic hydrocarbon solvents as a class have been subject to regulatory review for skin penetration and sensitisation enhancement effects. Modern cosmetics have largely moved away from aromatic hydrocarbon solvents due to consumer preference and regulatory trends. No specific EU Annex listing applies to this compound, but it would be evaluated under general cosmetic safety provisions of Regulation 1223/2009.
Known concerns
- Aromatic hydrocarbon solvent - potential skin penetration
- May be restricted due to benzene content concerns
- Not commonly used in modern cosmetic formulations
- IFRA restriction may apply as a aromatic solvent
