A 22-carbon straight-chain alkane — inert, wax-like emollient, sometimes also listed under fragrance.
Docosane is the linear C22 alkane (CAS 629-97-0). It is a saturated, inert hydrocarbon — functionally similar to high-molecular-weight paraffin waxes — that acts as an emollient, skin-conditioning agent, and body former in sticks and balms. Chemically it is extremely unreactive, not irritating, and not sensitizing at typical concentrations; CIR has reviewed saturated-hydrocarbon alkanes broadly as safe when free of PAH contamination. Sometimes listed with 'fragrance' function when contributing a subtle waxy/clean note, but its principal role is physical, not olfactory.
