About
Ethyl Stearate is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Ethyl Stearate (CAS 111-61-5) is the ethyl ester of stearic acid (C18). It functions as an emollient, skin-conditioning agent, and viscosity modifier in cosmetic formulations. As a simple fatty acid ester, it is readily metabolized by skin esterases into ethanol and stearic acid, both of which are naturally present in the body. The CIR Expert Panel reviewed alkyl stearates and concluded they are safe as used in cosmetics. Non-irritating, non-sensitizing, and well-tolerated at typical cosmetic concentrations.
Skin benefits
- Gentle, effective emollient
- Skin softening and smoothing
- Non-greasy moisture barrier
- Natural skin compatibility — metabolizes to endogenous compounds
Known concerns
- Essentially no safety concerns at cosmetic use levels
- May feel slightly waxy in high concentrations
