About
Ethylhexyl laurate — a lightweight emollient ester that gives a dry, silky skin feel. Well-tolerated and a common isopropyl-myristate alternative.
Ethylhexyl laurate (2-ethylhexyl dodecanoate, CAS 20292-08-4) is a synthetic ester of lauric acid and 2-ethylhexanol. It is a widely used emollient prized for its dry-touch skin feel and low comedogenicity compared to isopropyl myristate. CIR reviewed the 2-ethylhexyl-ester family as safe as used in cosmetics. EU CosIng lists it without restriction, and no SCCS opinion has flagged concerns. It is an alternative to heavier emollient esters in facial formulations.
Skin benefits
- Lightweight emollient ester
- Excellent skin feel and spreadability
- Low comedogenicity relative to heavier esters
Known concerns
