About
Dried leaves of Eucalyptus globulus, the blue gum eucalyptus tree, containing essential oil with high 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) content along with flavonoids and tannins. Provides antimicrobial and decongestant properties but requires careful concentration control.
Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf is the dried plant material from Eucalyptus globulus (Myrtaceae). Key constituents include essential oil (1,8-cineole/eucalyptol 60-80%, alpha-pinene, limonene), flavonoids (quercetin, rutin), and tannins. CAS 84625-32-1 is listed in CosIng. Under EU Regulation 1223/2009, Eucalyptus globulus extract is permitted but eucalyptol is listed in EU Annex III for certain uses. The SCCS has reviewed eucalyptus oil with notes on sensitization potential at high concentrations. The essential oil content makes this more cautionary than simple leaf powders from edible plants.
Skin benefits
- Antimicrobial properties from essential oil content
- Decongestant for oily/congested skin
- Anti-inflammatory from flavonoid content
- Cooling sensation from eucalyptol
Known concerns
- 1,8-Cineole (eucalyptol) is a known mild skin sensitizer in susceptible individuals
- Eucalyptus essential oil can cause dermatitis in sensitive individuals
- Not recommended for use around the mouth or for individuals with perfume sensitivity
- May interact with certain medications absorbed through skin
