A genus of lactic acid bacteria commonly found in plants and fruits, used in cosmetics for its probiotic and skin-balancing properties.

Fructobacillus is a bacterial genus within the lactic acid bacteria group. While not as extensively studied as Lactobacillus in cosmetics, it is considered a non-pathogenic, food-grade microorganism. The EU cosmetics regulation does not restrict this genus; however, finished products using live probiotics must comply with preservation requirements to prevent microbial contamination.

Skin benefits

  • Probiotic balance may support skin microbiome
  • May help reduce harmful bacterial load on skin

Known concerns

  • Risk of microbial contamination if preservation is inadequate
  • Potential for skin colonization in immunocompromised individuals
