About

A dual cyclic acetal of glyceraldehyde used as a green solvent in cosmetics, with low acute toxicity and good skin compatibility.

Glycerol formal is a mixture of 1,3-dioxolane-4-ylmethanol and 1,3-dioxan-5-ol. It functions as a solvent and plasticizer in cosmetic formulations. Low acute toxicity (LD50 > 5000 mg/kg). No EU CosIng restriction applies. The acetal structure can hydrolyze under acidic conditions, releasing small amounts of formaldehyde-associated species, but at negligible levels.

Skin benefits

  • Green solvent alternative
  • Plasticizer in cosmetic formulations

Known concerns

  • May hydrolyze to release minor aldehyde species under extreme conditions
