About
A conjugated dienal — chemically very similar to 2,4-hexadienal in reactivity. Skin sensitizer class; not appropriate for leave-on cosmetics.
Heptadienal (CAS 4313-03-5, likely 2,4-heptadienal) is a short-chain doubly-conjugated α,β-unsaturated aldehyde. This functional group class is highly reactive toward skin protein thiols and amines (Michael addition), which underlies the documented skin sensitization and irritation profile of sibling compounds like 2,4-hexadienal and 2,4-decadienal. GHS classifications typically include acute oral toxicity, skin irritation, serious eye damage, and skin sensitization. Cosmetic-specific CIR/SCCS monographs are lacking. Industry practice is to avoid this class in leave-on cosmetic products; trace flavor occurrence in food is a different regulatory context.
