About
Fish mint (Houttuynia) water — a traditional East Asian herbal hydrosol with soothing claims. Distinctive aroma and limited cosmetic safety data.
Houttuynia cordata water (CAS 164288-50-0) is the aqueous steam distillate from fish mint, a traditional East Asian herb (also called yu xing cao). It contains quercetin glycosides, low levels of essential oil fractions, and houttuynin (decanoylacetaldehyde) responsible for the characteristic pungent aroma. In cosmetics it is used for soothing and skin-conditioning claims. No EU CosIng restriction applies. Houttuynin and related aldehydes can be sensitisers in reactive skin. Peer-reviewed cosmetic toxicology is limited, but the plant has a long food-use history in parts of Asia.
