About
Hydrastine, Hydrastinine And Their Salts is a cosmetic ingredient. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Hydrastine and hydrastinine are isoquinoline alkaloids found in goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis). They exhibit bronchoconstrictor and oxytocic activity. EU CLP classification includes H302 (harmful if swallowed), H312 (harmful in contact with skin), and H332 (harmful if inhaled). The EU Cosmetics Regulation Annex III restricts these alkaloids at ≥0.1% in cosmetic products. Their pharmacological activity (oxytocic, uterine stimulant) and systemic toxicity concerns limit cosmetic application despite the natural origin.
Known concerns
- Acute toxicity H302/H312/H332
- Oxytocic pharmacological activity
- Bronchoconstrictor effects
- Systemic toxicity concerns
- Restricted to ≤0.1% in EU cosmetics
