About
An extract from the green seaweed Enteromorpha compressa that has been enzymatically or acid-hydrolyzed, used as a skin conditioning agent in cosmetic products.
Hydrolyzed Enteromorpha Compressa is an hydrolysate of the thallus of the green seaweed Enteromorpha compressa (family Ulvaceae), produced by acid, enzyme, or other hydrolysis methods. Seaweed-derived ingredients are generally rich in polysaccharides, minerals, and amino acids that support skin health. Enteromorpha species are not listed in EU Annex II (prohibited) or Annex III (restricted) under Regulation 1223/2009. As a marine-derived ingredient, batch-to-batch variability in composition is a consideration for quality control but does not represent a safety hazard at normal cosmetic use levels.
Function
Skin benefits
- Polysaccharide content provides humectant and skin conditioning effects
- Rich in minerals and trace elements that support skin barrier function
Known concerns
- Marine algae may bioaccumulate trace heavy metals from growing environment (batch-dependent quality)
- Cross-reactivity with other algae or fungal-based ingredients in highly sensitized individuals (rare)
