About
A gentle aromatic alcohol (found naturally in gastrodia and other plants) — conditioning with mild antimicrobial activity.
Hydroxybenzyl Alcohol (typically the para- isomer, 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, CAS 623-05-2) is a simple aromatic alcohol that occurs naturally in plants such as Gastrodia elata (Tian Ma in TCM), where it is considered an active constituent. In cosmetics it provides mild antimicrobial and skin-conditioning function and is also used as a fragrance-adjacent aromatic. Its low molecular weight and polarity make it broadly formulation-compatible. Topical tolerance at typical cosmetic levels is good; aromatic alcohols can be allergenic in a small subset of users at higher concentrations, and isomer-specific data density varies. A dedicated CIR monograph is limited, so the evidence level is moderate rather than high, but its natural origin and widespread use support a favorable score.
