About

The iconic trace component of jasmine absolute — white-floral at dilution, fecal at concentration. FEMA GRAS; used sparingly in perfumery.

Indole (CAS 120-72-9) is a bicyclic heteroaromatic naturally present in jasmine, orange blossom, neroli, and gardenia essential oils, and is also produced by gut microbial tryptophan metabolism. In perfumery it is a signature trace ingredient of white floral and narcotic-floral bases — intense and malodorous neat, but at dilution it gives the characteristic heady jasmine effect. FEMA GRAS for flavor use. At high doses some genotoxicity signals appear in the literature, but at cosmetic trace use levels (often <0.1%) these are not considered practically relevant. RIFM/IFRA cover the material. Upper-yellow (70) reflects practical skin compatibility balanced against cautious high-dose toxicology.
