Inorganic sulphites and hydrogensulphites (including sodium sulphite, sodium bisulphite, and potassium metabisulphite) are a class of preservatives regulated under EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009 with a maximum permitted concentration of 0.2% calculated as free SO2. These compounds are effective antioxidants but are classified as skin sensitizers (H317) and respiratory sensitizers (H334), restricted in products for asthmatics or individuals with sulphite sensitivity. Products containing sulphites must be labeled accordingly.
