About
Inula root powder, a traditional Ayurvedic herb included in skincare for its anti-inflammatory and skin-protective properties.
Inula racemosa contains sesquiterpene lactones (including alantolactone and isoalantolactone), inulin, and heliannuol-type diterpenes. The sesquiterpene lactones are contact allergens in susceptible individuals and are subject to EU restrictions analogous to other allergenic plant constituents. At cosmetic dilution levels, sensitisation risk is low. No specific EU Annex restriction exists, but it should be evaluated alongside related Inula species already under SCCS review.
Skin benefits
- Anti-inflammatory activity via NF-κB and COX-2 inhibition
- Traditional use for wound healing and skin infections
Known concerns
- Sesquiterpene lactones (alantolactone) are known contact allergens
- Limited cosmetic-specific toxicological data available
- Advisable to patch-test in leave-on products
