About

A woody-camphor fragrance ester — pleasant in perfumery at low levels but can sensitize in repeat exposure.

Isobornyl Isovalerate (CAS 7779-73-9, bornyval) is the isovalerate ester of isoborneol. It has a fresh, woody, slightly camphoraceous, valerian-like scent and was historically used medicinally as a sedative. In modern cosmetics it is a fragrance ingredient used at very low levels (typically <0.1%). IFRA assesses isobornyl-class esters for allergenic potential; they are not high-frequency sensitizers but have triggered occasional contact-dermatitis reports. No oncology or reproductive-tox signals at cosmetic exposure.
