About
A film-forming polymer with diethanolamine component raising nitrosamine formation concerns in EU cosmetics formulation.
Isobutylene/MA Copolymer DEA is the diethanolamine salt of an isobutylene/maleic anhydride copolymer, used as a film-forming and viscosity-controlling agent in cosmetics. The presence of DEA raises nitrosamine formation concerns during storage, as secondary amines can react with nitrosating agents. The SCCS has expressed concerns about DEA in cosmetics; while not banned, careful formulation control is required under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.
Skin benefits
- Film-forming for long-wear cosmetics
- Viscosity control
- Skin conditioning
Known concerns
- Diethanolamine (DEA) component can form carcinogenic nitrosamines
- SCCS has flagged DEA-related concerns in cosmetic formulations
- Environmental concern from polymer accumulation
