About
A non-ionic surfactant (ethoxylated branched lauryl alcohol). Functional but, like other ethoxylates, can carry trace 1,4-dioxane unless purified.
Isolaureth-6 is a polyethylene-glycol ether of branched lauryl alcohol (with about six ethylene-oxide units). It acts as a non-ionic surfactant, emulsifier, and solubilizer in cleansers, lotions, and color cosmetics. The ethoxylation process can produce trace 1,4-dioxane (a probable human carcinogen) as a contaminant unless manufacturers strip it. CIR considers laureth/isolaureth-class surfactants safe when 1,4-dioxane is controlled below 10 ppm. Skin tolerance is generally good; rinse-off products may cause mild defatting at higher use levels.
Function
Skin benefits
- Stabilizes emulsions
- Aids cleansing
- Solubilizes oils into water phases
Known concerns
- Possible 1,4-dioxane contamination if unpurified
- Mild defatting in rinse-off use
- Less biodegradable than newer alternatives
