About
Potent prenylated flavonoids from Sophora flavescens root with strong anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity, but notable sensitisation and toxicity concerns.
Kushenols and kurarinone are prenylated flavonoids isolated from the roots of Sophora flavescens (Kushen), a key herb in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Kushenols A-L and kurarinone arelavonoids with a geranyl side chain conferring strong biological activity. They are potent NADPH oxidase inhibitors, suppressing reactive oxygen species production in neutrophils. Kurarinone is also a direct 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor. The prenylated structure responsible for their activity is also associated with photosensitisation and contact allergy. Repeated topical application has been associated with contact dermatitis in experimental models.

Known concerns
- Known photosensitiser — increases UV-induced skin damage risk
