About
A sterol naturally found in wool fat (lanolin) — acts as an excellent skin-conditioning emollient that mimics the skin's own lipids and supports barrier function.
Lanosterol (lanosta-8,24-dien-3β-ol) is the principal sterol of lanolin (wool wax), typically comprising 5–10% of lanolin's sterol fraction. It is structurally similar to cholesterol and sitosterol. In cosmetics, it functions as a skin-conditioning agent and emulsifier, and is especially valued for its high melting point and ability to form protective films. It is not listed in EU restricted or banned Annexes. Lanosterol is well-tolerated even on compromised skin barriers.
Skin benefits
- Skin-identical emollient — reinforces barrier function
- Supports skin lipid balance
- Good for dry and sensitive skin formulations
Known concerns
- Minor concern: derived from lanolin which may cause allergy in lanolin-sensitive individuals
