Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A short-chain ethoxylated lauryl alcohol (1 mole EO) used as a surfactant and emulsifier that may cause mild skin irritation at higher concentrations.
Laureth-1 (CAS 4536-30-5) is an ethoxylated lauryl alcohol with an average of 1 mole of ethylene oxide. Short-chain laureths (with very few EO units) are more lipophilic and can be more irritating than longer-chain ethoxylated versions. Laureth-1 is not listed in EU Annex II or III restrictions. The SCCS has reviewed ethoxylated alcohols and considers them safe at typical use concentrations in rinse-off products, though higher concentrations in leave-on products warrant evaluation.
Skin benefits
- Surfactant and emulsifying function
- Helps solubilise ingredients
Known concerns
- Mild skin irritation potential at high concentrations
- More lipophilic/irritating than higher ethoxylated laureths
