About
Laureth-50 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Laureth-50 is produced by ethoxylating lauryl (dodecyl) alcohol with approximately 50 moles of ethylene oxide, making it a highly water-soluble, non-ionic surfactant. Such high ethoxylation degrees increase the risk of skin irritation and disruption of skin barrier function in sensitive individuals. EU Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 does not specifically restrict Laureth-50, but the SCCS has flagged that high-EO ethoxylates may warrant additional irritation considerations in leave-on products. Typically used at low concentrations as a solubilizer or viscosity modifier.
Skin benefits
- Effective solubilizer for water-insoluble ingredients
- Can modify product viscosity and texture
Known concerns
- Elevated irritation potential due to high ethoxylation level
- Skin barrier disruption possible with prolonged leave-on use
- Potential 1,4-dioxane residue
