About
A cationic isoquinolinium quaternary surfactant — antimicrobial and hair-conditioning. Effective but more irritating than modern quats, especially to eyes.
Lauryl isoquinolinium bromide (N-dodecylisoquinolinium bromide, CAS 93-23-2) is a cationic quaternary ammonium surfactant based on the isoquinoline heterocycle. It is used as an antimicrobial agent, hair-conditioning ingredient, and surface-active cation in specialty products. Like most lipophilic quaternary cations it is surface active, substantive to hair and skin, and acutely toxic to aquatic organisms. CIR has reviewed related isoquinolinium compounds and restricted use due to mucosal and eye irritation — the SCCS and CIR are generally cautious with long-chain isoquinolinium quats. EU CosIng lists it but with expectation of limited use. Preservative effect may contribute to formula stability but at the cost of irritation potential.
Skin benefits
- Cationic surfactant with antimicrobial activity
- Hair-conditioning and substantivity
- Contributes to product preservation
Known concerns
- Cationic surfactant — eye and mucosal irritant
- Aquatic toxicity typical of quaternary cations
- Limited modern CIR review for this specific compound
