About
A silicone polymer that combines lauryl alkyl groups with a siloxane backbone — provides a lightweight, silky skin feel while forming a breathable moisture barrier.
Lauryl Methicone is a modified siloxane polymer in which some methyl groups on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) backbone are replaced with lauryl alkyl substituents. This structural modification reduces the volatility and increases the substantive film-forming properties on skin compared to standard linear PDMS. The lauryl substituent makes it more hydrophobic, improving water resistance and skin adhesion. It is listed in CosIng as a skin-conditioning agent and antifoaming agent. Silicone polymers as a class are considered low concern in cosmetics.
Skin benefits
- Lightweight silicone emollient — smooths and softens skin
- Forms breathable barrier — prevents transepidermal water loss
- Improves product slip and sensory profile
Known concerns
- Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) trace contamination in some siloxanes (EU restricted)
- Environmental concern: some siloxanes are persistent in aquatic environments
