About
Ground seed material from the meadowfoam plant. Used as a natural physical exfoliant in scrubs and masks, and as a biodegradable alternative to plastic microbeads.
Limnanthes alba (meadowfoam) seed powder is the defatted, milled seed remaining after the familiar meadowfoam seed oil is pressed out. In cosmetics its primary role is mechanical exfoliation — a gentle-to-moderate physical polish in scrubs, masks, and cleansers. Because it is plant-based and biodegradable, it has become a common replacement for polyethylene microbeads, which the EU and several other jurisdictions have restricted for rinse-off cosmetics. Safety profile is benign: plant seed material with food-adjacent heritage, no systemic concerns, no reported allergy signal at cosmetic concentrations. The main caveat is mechanical — coarse particle sizes or over-aggressive scrubbing can disrupt the skin barrier regardless of the exfoliant identity.
Skin benefits
- Natural plant-based physical exfoliant
- Biodegradable alternative to plastic microbeads
- Gentle mechanical polish for dull skin
Known concerns
- Mechanical over-exfoliation possible with aggressive use
- Coarse grades may irritate sensitive or barrier-compromised skin
