About
M-Tolylidene diisocyanate (Toluene diisocyanate) is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Its specific function may vary between products. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Toluene diisocyanate (TDI) is classified as H330 (fatal if inhaled), H334 (may cause allergy or asthma symptoms when inhaled), H351 (suspected of causing cancer), and H317 (may cause allergic skin reaction). It is one of the most potent respiratory sensitizers known, capable of causing occupational asthma even at very low airborne concentrations. TDI is listed in EU Regulation 1223/2009 Annex II (prohibited substances) for cosmetic use. The compound reacts rapidly with nucleophiles including proteins in skin and respiratory tissue, forming haptens that trigger immune sensitization. Its use in cosmetics is absolutely prohibited; it is primarily an industrial chemical used in polyurethane foam and coatings production.
Known concerns
- Banned in EU cosmetics — Annex II
