About

A mixed metal carbonate-hydroxide with an excellent safety profile, commonly used in cosmetics as an opacifying agent and pH adjuster.

Magnesium/aluminum hydroxide carbonate (also known as magnesium aluminum carbonate, hydrotalcite-type compound, or E504ii in food use) is a mixed metal carbonate-hydroxide complex. It is used in cosmetic formulations as an opacifying agent, pH adjuster, and occasionally as an absorbent. The compound has a long history of safe use in both cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications. Under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, it is permitted without restriction as it is essentially inert on the skin. The aluminum component has raised some consumer concerns regarding systemic absorption, but topical cosmetic use presents negligible risk compared to dietary or pharmaceutical exposure.
