About
A magnesium salt of coconut oil-derived fatty acid sulfates used as an anionic surfactant in cleansing formulations; it is milder than SLS but shares the same sulfate surfactant concerns including potential skin barrier disruption.
Magnesium Coco-Sulfate is the magnesium salt of sulfated coconut oil fatty acids, similar to sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) but with a mixed-chain distribution from coconut oil and a magnesium cation. The magnesium salt is generally considered milder than the sodium salt because magnesium sulfates are less soluble and form smaller micelles. However, the underlying sulfate surfactant structure still carries concerns about skin barrier disruption at high concentrations.
Skin benefits
- Effective anionic surfactant for cleansing and foaming in rinse-off products
- Derived from coconut oil, making it more naturally-derived than synthetic sulfate surfactants
Known concerns
- Anionic sulfate surfactant can disrupt skin barrier and cause irritation at high concentrations
- May cause cumulative skin barrier damage in daily-use rinse-off products
- Similar class concerns as SLS, though typically milder
