About

Finely ground flour from partially sprouted barley seeds, known for its nourishing and conditioning properties in skincare.

Malt flour is produced from finely ground, partially germinated barley seeds (Hordeum vulgare). As with malt juice, barley is one of the 14 EU-mandated declarable allergens. The flour form is more concentrated than the juice and requires proper labeling in cosmetic products sold in the EU. While topical use is generally safe for non-celiac individuals, the presence of gluten means it must be declared on the INCI list and product packaging.

Skin benefits

  • Contains skin-nourishing maltose and glucose
  • Moisturizing properties
  • Contains amino acids and B vitamins

Known concerns

  • Must be declared as major allergen (barley/gluten) on product label in EU
  • Not suitable for gluten-free cosmetic lines
