About
A lauryl sulfate neutralised with a mix of isopropanolamines. The secondary-amine component (DIPA) carries nitrosamine-formation concerns similar to DEA.
Mixed isopropanolamines lauryl sulfate is a lauryl sulfate surfactant neutralised with a blend of isopropanolamines — monoisopropanolamine (MIPA, primary amine), diisopropanolamine (DIPA, secondary amine), and triisopropanolamine (TIPA, tertiary amine). DIPA is the concern: secondary amines can react with nitrosating agents to form N-nitroso-diisopropanolamine, a nitrosamine with positive genotoxicity signals. The rubric flags secondary-amine condensates as orange/red. While isopropanolamines have historically been treated as marginally lower-risk than ethanolamines (DEA), the mechanistic concern is the same. EU Cosmetics Regulation Annex III entry 60 restricts secondary alkanolamines and their salts in cosmetics unless nitrosamine-generation conditions are avoided and maximum nitrosamine levels are met.
Skin benefits
- Cleansing and foam in rinse-off products
Known concerns
- Contains secondary-amine DIPA — nitrosamine precursor
- Annex III conditional restrictions
- Less scrutinised than DEA but same concern mechanism
- Safer non-amine-neutralised lauryl sulfates available
