About

Balsam Peru resin is a known fragrance allergen restricted in EU cosmetics when used as a fragrance ingredient due to significant sensitization concerns.

Myroxylon pereirae (Balsam Peru) resin contains benzyl benzoate, cinnamyl cinnamate (both contact allergens), vanillin, and numerous other components including resin acids. Under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 Annex II (reference II/1136), Balsam Peru is prohibited when used as a fragrance ingredient. When present from natural ingredients rather than added as fragrance, it must still be declared as a potential allergen if present above 0.001% in leave-on or 0.01% in rinse-off products. It is one of the most commonly reported contact allergens in fragrance sensitivity testing.
