About
A modified polysaccharide derived from chitosan that forms films and provides moisturizing benefits to the skin.
N-Succinoyl Chitosan is the product of reacting chitosan (deacetylated chitin) with succinic anhydride, introducing succinyl groups onto the chitosan backbone. This modification improves water solubility while maintaining biocompatibility. Chitosan and its derivatives are listed in EU CosIng without restrictions. The succinoyl modification is considered safe, and the ingredient is used in film-forming and moisturizing cosmetic applications.
Skin benefits
- Film-forming properties help trap moisture on skin
- Improves skin barrier function and texture
- Acts as a humectant due to hydrophilic succinyl groups
Known concerns
- Chitosan is derived from crustacean shells — allergy concern for shellfish-sensitive individuals
