About
One of the lowest ethoxylated variants in the Nonoxynol family, this surfactant is strongly associated with endocrine disruption due to its rapid degradation to nonylphenol, and is banned from EU cosmetic use.
Nonoxynol-4 is a nonionic surfactant with an average of only 4 ethylene oxide units, placing it among the more lipophilic and more rapidly degrading compounds in the Nonoxynol series. It is classified as a Category 1 endocrine-disrupting substance under EU classification criteria, and EU REACH Annex XVII (entry 46a) prohibits its use in cosmetic products. Its high lipophilicity also means elevated bioaccumulation potential and significant aquatic toxicity.
Known concerns
- Category 1 endocrine disruptor (EU criteria)
- EU Annex XVII ban in cosmetic products
- High aquatic toxicity
- Bioaccumulation potential
- Rapid degradation to nonylphenol
