About
Nonyl Nonoxynol-150 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
NONYL NONOXYNOL-150 is a nonionic surfactant based on nonylphenol condensed with 150 moles of ethylene oxide. Nonylphenol ethoxylates are under regulatory scrutiny in the EU due to environmental persistence and potential endocrine-disrupting properties of their breakdown metabolites (nonylphenol). While the fully ethoxylated parent compound is not banned, the EU has restricted certain nonylphenol ethoxylates in rinse-off products, and environmental regulations increasingly target these substances. The high EO count (150) mitigates some skin irritation concerns relative to low-EO analogues.
Skin benefits
- Powerful emulsifier enabling stable formulations with diverse oil phases
- Effective wetting agent for improved product spreadability
Known concerns
- Metabolites (nonylphenol) are known endocrine disruptors and persistent environmental pollutants
- EU regulations restrict discharge of nonylphenol ethoxylates into aquatic environments
- High molecular weight may pose challenges for biodegradation pathways
