About
Octoxynol-10 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Octoxynol-10 is the polyethylene glycol ether of 4-tert-octylphenol at 10 mol ethylene oxide average. The shorter ethoxylate chain compared to higher-EO variants makes it more surface-active and potentially more irritating to skin and mucous membranes. EU alkylphenol ethoxylate restrictions are based on degradation products (octylphenol), which are persistent EDCs. No direct cosmetic ban exists, but SCCS monitoring continues. Higher concentrations can cause surfactant-related irritation.
Known concerns
- Environmental persistence: degrades to octylphenol, a known endocrine disruptor
- Moderate skin irritation potential at higher concentrations
- Potential for residual octylphenol contamination
