About
Opium is a cosmetic ingredient. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Opium is the dried latex of the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) containing numerous alkaloids including morphine, codeine, and thebaine. Many of these are controlled substances under the UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. Opium derivatives with analgesic potency are prohibited in cosmetic products under EU Cosmetics Regulation Annex II. The narcotic nature and abuse potential completely preclude cosmetic use.
