About

Pediococcus is a genus of lactic acid bacteria used as a skin conditioning agent. These 'good' bacteria can produce antimicrobial peptides (bacteriocins) and help support a healthy skin microbiome when applied topically.

Pediococcus is a Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic coccus that produces lactic acid via homofermentation. In skin care, it functions primarily as a microbiome-supporting ingredient. Pediococci produce bacteriocins (pediocin PA-1, A373) active against Gram-positive spoilage organisms, which may translate to mild topical antimicrobial benefits. They also produce small amounts of D-lactic acid, which may mildly acidify skin. Safety is based on their long history in food fermentation (Pediococcus pentosaceus is 'Generally Recognized As Safe' in foods). Topical use of live bacteria in cosmetics is limited by preservation challenges; more commonly only the ferment filtrate or lysate is used.

Function

ANTI-SEBUM, SKIN CONDITIONING - MISCELLANEOUS

Skin benefits

  • Produces antimicrobial peptides (bacteriocins) that may reduce pathogenic skin bacteria
  • Lactic acid production may mildly exfoliate and hydrate skin
  • Supports balanced skin microbiome
  • Anti-sebum effect from microbial metabolic activity

Known concerns

  • Live bacterial formulations require careful preservation to prevent opportunistic growth
  • Risk of contamination if manufacturing controls fail
  • Limited direct safety data for cosmetic topical application
  • May trigger immune responses in severely immunocompromised individuals
