About

An ethoxylated soy fatty amine surfactant — milder than the parent amine but carries PEG and nitrosamine concerns.

PEG-10 soyamine is a polyethoxylated soy fatty amine used as an emulsifier and mild cationic surfactant. Like other PEGylated ingredients it depends on supplier quality to minimise residual 1,4-dioxane (an IARC Group 2B possible carcinogen) and ethylene oxide. The fatty amine backbone introduces secondary amine functional groups capable of nitrosamine formation under nitrite contamination. SCCS and CIR have reviewed PEG-fatty amines and recommend strict control of those impurities. Use levels typically 0.1-5%.

Skin benefits

  • Nonionic soy-amine derivative used as emulsifier/surfactant
  • Improves mildness versus raw fatty amines
  • Can solubilise oils in personal care

Known concerns

  • Ethoxylated fatty amine — residual 1,4-dioxane from PEG processing
  • Secondary-amine backbone: potential for nitrosamine formation in presence of nitrites
  • Aquatic toxicity typical of PEGylated fatty amines
