About
A benzalkonium-type preservative combined with PEG-10 that has surfactant and antimicrobial properties but can be a skin sensitizer.
PEG-10 stearyl benzonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound related to benzalkonium chloride but with an added PEG-10 chain. Benzonium chloride derivatives are known contact sensitisers, and the PEG chain raises additional concern regarding potential contamination with 1,4-dioxane, a probable carcinogen. Under EU Annex III (Entry 57), benzalkonium chloride is restricted to ≤0.1% in ready-to-use rinse-off products; other benzonium derivatives are evaluated similarly.
Skin benefits
- Provides antimicrobial preservation
- Antistatic conditioning properties
Known concerns
- Known skin and respiratory sensitizer
- Risk of 1,4-dioxane contamination from PEG
- Benzalkonium-type compounds restricted in EU for rinse-off products
