About
A shorter-chain PEG tallow amine with conditioning and emulsifying utility but real nitrosamine and dioxane impurity concerns.
PEG-11 tallow amine (CAS 61791-26-2) is a polyethoxylated fatty amine derived from tallow, with a shorter ethoxylation chain than PEG-20. Functionally a cationic surfactant and emulsifier. The shorter PEG chain makes the molecule less hydrophilic but does not eliminate PEG-process 1,4-dioxane residual concerns. Like all fatty alkyl amines, it can form N-nitrosamines (genotoxic carcinogen class) if formulated with nitrosating agents. CIR review of PEG-alkyl amines recommends purified raw materials, low nitrosamine content, and rinse-off applications preferred. Score sits in the Moderate/orange band — functional but caveated.
Skin benefits
- Cationic hair conditioning
- Emulsion stabilization at lower ethoxylation
- Anti-static effect
Known concerns
- Nitrosamine formation if combined with nitrites
- 1,4-Dioxane residuals
- Tallow origin — not vegan
- Not ideal for leave-on use
