About
Carnauba wax softened with about 12 ethylene oxide units — ethoxylation turns a hard, brittle wax into a more emulsifiable and skin-friendly ingredient for water-based formulations.
PEG-12 Carnauba (CAS 223705-69-6) is the ethereum glycol ether of carnauba wax, where approximately 12 moles of ethylene oxide have been polymerized onto the wax esters per average molecule. Ethoxylation introduces hydrophilic polyethylene glycol segments that make the wax dispersible in water and compatible with emulsions. The ingredient functions as an emulsifier, opacifying agent, and viscosity controller. PEG-modified waxes have slightly more potential for skin sensitivity in very dry or compromised skin compared to unmodified waxes, but are generally well tolerated at cosmetic use levels.
Skin benefits
- Emulsification aid for wax-in-water formulations
- Opacifying and texture-enhancing
- Moisturizing occlusion from PEG segments
Known concerns
- Minor skin sensitization potential in dry or compromised skin
- Contains PEG moiety — consider for PEG-sensitive individuals
