About

A very highly ethoxylated PEG stearate with 120 moles of EO, functioning as a solubilizer and high-HLB emulsifier with very limited skin penetration.

PEG-120 Stearate is the polyethylene glycol (120 mol EO average) ester of stearic acid. The very high degree of ethoxylation results in an extremely large molecular size and very high HLB (~18-19), making it primarily a solubilizer for hydrophilic formulations. The large molecular size substantially limits skin penetration, and it is considered very mild. EU Cosmetics Regulation permits its use without restriction. The primary concern is residual ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane, which must comply with SCCS limits (EO < 1 ppm for leave-on products as a guideline).

Skin benefits

  • High-HLB solubilizer
  • Very limited skin penetration
  • Mild enough for sensitive skin

Known concerns

  • Potential trace EO/1,4-dioxane contamination from manufacturing
  • Very large molecule may affect formulation rheology
