About
An ethoxylated form of plant-derived phytosterols — works as an emulsifier and skin-conditioning agent. The ethoxylation improves water solubility while retaining the skin-beneficial properties of phytosterols.
PEG-20 Phytosterol is produced by ethoxylating natural phytosterols (such as β-sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol) with approximately 20 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of phytosterol. The ethoxylation converts the hydrophobic phytosterol into a water-dispersible ingredient suitable for emulsification. PEG-20 Phytosterol is listed in CosIng as a skin-conditioning emollient and emulsifier. Concerns relate primarily to residual ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane contamination, which are regulated impurities.
Skin benefits
- Plant sterol-based — supports skin barrier and has anti-inflammatory properties
- Emulsifying agent — enables stable emulsion formulations
Known concerns
- Ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane trace contamination (regulated by EU Cosmetics Regulation)
- PEG component may be problematic for very dry or compromised skin
