About
An ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene glycol that functions as a thickener and film-forming agent, giving products a rich, stable texture while acting as a moisture barrier on the skin.
PEG-25M is an extremely high molecular weight polyethylene glycol with approximately 25,000 ethylene oxide units. At this molecular size, systemic absorption is essentially impossible through intact skin, and the ingredient functions as a large, inert polymer. EU Cosmetics Regulation lists high-molecular-weight PEGs in Annex V as permitted viscosity-controlling agents. The ingredient must comply with the monomer purity requirements established under the Cosmetics Regulation, which effectively mandate that manufacturers control residual ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane to trace levels.
Skin benefits
- Excellent film-forming agent that creates a moisture-lock barrier on skin
- Viscosity-controlling thickener that improves product stability and sensory profile
Known concerns
- Raw material purity is critical since the polymer itself is inert but contaminants are not
- Standard residual monomer thresholds apply for EU market compliance
