About
A sorbitan ester ethoxylated with 4 mol EO, used as a W/O emulsifier in cosmetic formulations to stabilise oil-rich phases.
PEG-4 Sorbitan Triisostearate is a polysorbate-class emulsifier derived from sorbitan and isostearic acid with 4 mol of ethylene oxide. It is not listed in EU Cosmetics Regulation Annexes II–VI. As with all Polysorbate-type emulsifiers, it is widely used in food and cosmetics and has a broad safety record. Minor concerns exist around potential 1,4-dioxane residues from the ethoxylation step, which EU purity specifications for cosmetics limit to ≤10 mg/kg in the final product.
Skin benefits
- Stabilises oil-in-water emulsions
- Improves product texture and uniformity
- Can function as a solubiliser for essential oils
Known concerns
- Potential trace 1,4-dioxane from ethoxylation (EU-regulated impurity)
