PEG-40 HYDROGENATED TALLOW AMINE
Safety score · 0–100
Moderate
Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A hydrogenated, highly-ethoxylated tallow amine — cleaner-feeling than unsaturated variants but same amine-class concerns.
PEG-40 hydrogenated tallow amine (CAS 61791-26-2, hydrogenated grade) is a fully-saturated polyethoxylated fatty amine with 40 EO units. Hydrogenation suppresses rancidity and oxidative off-notes, and the high PEG count gives strong water solubility and low skin irritation. Functions as cationic surfactant, emulsifier, and antistatic agent. CIR review supports the PEG-alkyl amine family as safe for rinse-off with raw-material controls. Structural nitrosamine-formation concern remains, and high-PEG products require disciplined dioxane-stripping during manufacture. Score at the top of Moderate/orange, lifted by saturated + high-PEG profile but not into yellow because class concerns persist.
Skin benefits
- Low skin irritation at high ethoxylation
- Cationic conditioning
- Stable oxidation profile from hydrogenation
- Anti-static behavior
Known concerns
- Amine + nitrite nitrosamine formation
- 1,4-Dioxane residuals
- Not vegan (tallow)
