About

A modified jojoba-derived emulsifier that helps blend oil and water ingredients in skincare formulas.

PEG-40 jojoba alcohol is produced by ethoxylating jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) fatty alcohols to an average of 40 moles ethylene oxide per molecule. Ethoxylated ingredients are subject to potential contamination concerns including 1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide, both of which are regulated under EU cosmetics law. The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has noted concerns about 1,4-dioxane impurity in ethoxylated surfactants. PEG-40 jojoba alcohol is permitted but requires purification controls to minimize these impurities.

Skin benefits

  • Effective solubilizer for essential oils and fragrances in aqueous formulations
  • Emollient properties from jojoba fatty alcohol base
  • Provides skin-conditioning benefits as part of formulated products

Known concerns

  • 1,4-dioxane impurity is a EU-regulated potential carcinogen requiring analytical control
  • Ethylene oxide contamination concern in ethoxylated ingredients
  • May be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from jojoba source
