PEG-6 OLEATE
Safety score · 0–100
Fine
Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A lower-degree PEG ester of oleic acid used as a surfactant and emulsifier; it has mildly elevated irritation potential compared to higher ethoxylated variants.
PEG-6 OLEATE is the polyethylene glycol (6 mol EO average) monoester of oleic acid, functioning as a nonionic surfactant and emulsifier in cosmetic products. It is not listed in EU Annex II or III restriction lists. Lower-degree PEG esters such as this have a somewhat higher irritation profile than PEG-15 or higher variants, and may cause mild skin or eye irritation at elevated concentrations. Trace 1,4-dioxane from the ethoxylation process is a standard impurity consideration.
Skin benefits
- Effective emulsifier for low-to-medium polarity formulations
- Provides cleansing and surfactant action
Known concerns
- Mild skin or eye irritation possible at higher concentrations
- Potential trace 1,4-dioxane residue from ethoxylation process
