About
A mid-degree PEG ester of stearic acid with 7 moles of EO, functioning as a versatile emulsifier and thickener in cosmetic emulsions.
PEG-7 Stearate is the polyethylene glycol (7 mol EO average) ester of stearic acid. The moderate ethoxylation gives it amphiphilic properties suitable for both W/O and O/W emulsification depending on formulation context. It is listed in the EU Cosmetics Regulation inventory without restriction. The mid-range EO degree means somewhat greater skin interaction than higher-EO variants, but at typical use concentrations (up to several percent in emulsions) it is considered safe. It may contribute to skin conditioning.
Skin benefits
- Versatile emulsifier for various textures
- Conditions and softens skin
- Improves product stability
Known concerns
- Potential trace EO/1,4-dioxane contamination from manufacturing
- Moderate skin interaction compared to high-EO variants
