About
An ethoxylated fatty acid ester used as an emulsifier in cosmetic formulations, generally safe with minor concerns about ethoxylation byproducts.
PEG-8 Di/Triricinoleate is an ethoxylated (8 moles EO average) ester of ricinoleic acid dimers and trimers (from castor oil). EU Regulation 1223/2009 does not specifically restrict this ingredient in Annex II or III. The ethoxylation process raises minor concern regarding potential residual ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane contamination, which are monitored by the SCCS. At normal cosmetic concentrations, this ingredient is considered safe. It functions as an emulsifying surfactant with good compatibility in cosmetic systems.
Function
Skin benefits
- Emulsifying properties stabilize oil-water formulations
- Conditions and softens skin
- Improves product texture and spreadability
Known concerns
- Residual ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane impurity concern (SCCS monitors ethoxylated ingredients)
- Minor skin irritation possible at high concentrations
